Where is The Galley of Lorne Inn?
Situated on the breathtaking West Coast of Scotland (two hours by car from Glasgow), Ardfern is a short way down the leafy B8002 off the main A816, 24 miles south of the bustling market town and ferry port of Oban and 14 miles north of Lochgilphead, gateway to Kintyre.
"Some helpful advice"
If arriving from the south, be aware if you are using a Satellite Navigation System. Sat Nav takes the shortest route which by two miles will take you instead down the B840 road between Cladich and Ford. Whilst scenic, this 21 mile single track road will add a lot of time to your journey. If you are coming from the Glasgow / Edinburgh area we strongly suggest that if time is of the essence you go via Arrochar, Inverary and Lochgilphead using the A83 then take the A816 towards Oban.
History
The area where Ardfern is located is known as the cradle of Scottish Christianity, with the Island of Iona closeby, historical Kilmartin glen with it's stone circles and cairns, and also the Dunadd, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Dalriada (500AD).
Ardfern was a fishing and crofting village and had it's own pier built in the 18th century, which was also later used as a calling point for steamers and puffers.
Today, Ardfern has it's own marina which boasts many yachting visitors from around the world. The Ardfern Yacht Centre is the perfect place to start your exploration of the Inner Hebrides. Loch Craignish is very sheltered and has no tidal access problems or loch gates.
