Ardfern Pirates Parade - Saturday 28th August

The great Ardfern Pirate parade offers the irresistible opportunity to dress up as a pirate, join in a parade and treasure hunt and drink beers. What's not to like?

Families dress up, convert prams to galleons, decorate the parade with pirate flags and boats and prepare floats. We've even had dressed up dogs! That's a mangy cur in Pirate.

All this silliness is not without reason. Pointless partying? Us? One of the great pirate vessels, the Flying Eagle, originally captained by the infamous Black Bart Roberts, crept into Loch Craignish in a storm, in the winter of 1720. Here she and her crew were captured by the Hanoverian militia of the day and tried and hanged in Edinburgh the following year. Their testimony provided much of the raw material for a lot of the subsequent writing on piracy, from Defoe to Stevenson. You could, in fact argue that the modern pirate mythology was invented here.

So, pack a stripey shirt, bandana and eyepatch and join in the fun. There will be pirate grub, buxom wenches, cabin crew and skulls and crossbones a plenty - aarrrrrrrrrr!

- Ardfern Pirate Parade: Saturday 28th August, leave from Craignish Village Hall 3pm.
-
Crowning of the Pirate King and Queen on pub lawn The Galleon of Lawn(!) with silly games, including a kid's treasure hunt, thereafter.
- Hornpipes and jigging to the music of "Finn" in the evening.
